Valedictorian Criteria and Selection Process for
Cold Lake High School
Each year, a valedictorian is selected to address their classmates and the guests at the graduation ceremony. These individuals are selected using the following criteria:
- The original short list is constructed by looking at the academic average of Grade 12 students. Students need to be enrolled and/or have completed courses at the highest academic level. The 5 courses considered for their qualifying average are:
- English 30-1
- Social 30-1 or 30-2
- Math 30-1 or 30-2
- Biology 30/Chemistry 30/Physics 30 (2 of these)
- The students selected must have attended Cold Lake High School for their full Gr.12 academic year.
- The selected students need to have made significant contributions to their school and/or community and be a good representative of the CLHS values of Integrity, Commitment and Pride.
- The short list will then be distributed to the entire teaching staff and administration. The final selection of the valedictorian will be made by a staff vote. In case of a tie, the principal will make a final decision.
- The academic averages of the students who make the short list will not be made public, but the students themselves will be contacted to let them know they were selected to the list.
- The valedictorian will be officially announced approximately 2 weeks prior to the graduation ceremony.
